چکیده

The use ofcarbon fibre implants in orthopaedics is widely reported, but the potential risks associated with their use are less well defined. In its pure form carbon fibre may be spun into ligament and tendon replacements. Incorporated into epoxy resin, it has been used in plates for the internal fixation of fractures. Carbon fibre has also been used to reinforce polyethylene composites for joint replacement, where it is claimed to reduce the plastic deformation of articular surfaces. The intra-articular use of pure carbon fibre has been questioned because of the synovial reaction produced by

The Result of Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty in Patients with Metallosis Following a Catastrophic Failure of a Polyethylene Liner

BACKGROUND Wear cannot be completely prevented after total hip arthroplasty. If severe polyethylene (PE) liner wear develops, the so-called catastrophic failure occurs and metallosis develops. We postulated that longevity of the new implant may be affected after revision surgery for metallosis following a catastrophic failure of a PE liner due to the substantial amount of PE wear particles and ...

Total hip arthroplasty using TRI-LOCK® DePuy bone preservation femoral stem: our experience.

PURPOSE In this study we report our 3-years experience (from January 2010 to December 2013) of 101 total hip arthroplasties using Tri-Lock® DePuy bone preservation femoral stem, all performed in our clinic. METHODS 101 patients (F54-M47; median age around 69 yrs, range 42-84 yrs). 51 arthroplasties were implanted on the right side whereas 50 on the left side. The average follow-up was 27,3 mo...

Wear of the cup in the Charnley LFA in the young patient.

Since wear and loosening of the ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene cup are factors which limit the life of an arthroplasty we have attempted to identify factors associated with either low wear (0.02 mm/year or less) or high wear (0.2 mm/year or more). In a series of 1434 Charnley low-friction arthroplasties (1092 patients) 190 (13.2%) showed low wear while 149 (10.4%) showed high wear. We...

Cementless uncoated polyethylene acetabular components in total hip replacement. Review of five- to 10-year results.

We reviewed the results of 545 consecutive total hip replacements using a cementless non-coated high-density polyethylene acetabular component combined with a cemented Müller stem at five to 10 years. In all, 421 patients (445 hips) were available for review, 118 by questionnaire and 303 by examination and radiography. Of these, 86% had a good or excellent result. We found a high rate of radiol...

Outcome and serum ion determination up to 11 years after implantation of a cemented metal-on-metal hip prosthesis

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Little is known about the long-term outcome of cemented metal-on-metal hip arthroplasties. We evaluated a consecutive series of metal-on-metal polyethylene-backed cemented hip arthroplasties implanted in patients under 60 years of age. METHODS 109 patients (134 joint replacements) were followed prospectively for mean 9 (7-11) years. The evaluation included clinical scor...
